Bloom Habit -
Timing of blooms are effected primarily by climate and growing
conditions. Bloom season generally starts during the last month of
spring, with peak blooms the first month of summer. Bloom seasons are
classified as early, mid season and late,
with some daylilies also noted as very early or very
late. After an initial bloom, some daylilies will have one or
more additional flourishes of bloom. Reblooming patterns are
effected by a number of conditions (sun, water, fertilizer, soil,
etc.), but removing dead scapes will help increase cycle frequency.
The quantity and
quality of reblooms will vary by variety, having one, two or more
additional
cycles. Stella D'Oro is considered the best rebloomer, with cycles
possibly
from spring until frost.
While recent hybridizing has increased the bloom period, most will last
less than 24 hours. Blooming categories are Diurnal :
the vast majority open in the morning and finish the same night, Nocturnal:
open in the evening and are usually spent by the next afternoon, Extended:
are those whose blooms approach or surpass 24 hours. In general, to be
considered as an extended bloom, the flower should last a minimum of 16
hours.
Foliage - a Dormant
plant is completely defoliated in winter, an Evergreen
plant retains its foliage throughout the year, Semi-Evergreens
are in-between, as the plants typically die down, losing some foliage,
but retains some greenery. In cold climates, semi-evergreens can be
dormant
or evergreen in warmer climates. As a general rule, evergreen
daylilies
do best in southern zones and dormant do best in northern zones.
Genotype - based on the number of
chromosomes, most daylilies are classified as diploid or tetraploid
(triploid daylilies also exist). Chromosome numbers are primarily of
interest only to hybridizers, but Tetraploid
typically have larger flowers with heavier texture and more blooms
per stem over a longer period.
