Hostas are a beloved staple in shade and part-shade gardens, and for good reason! Here is why you will love them:

Follow these steps to ensure your Hostas thrive:
- Choosing the Right Location:
- Light: Most Hostas prefer partial shade, receiving morning sun and afternoon shade. Some varieties with thicker leaves can tolerate more sun, especially in cooler climates. Avoid planting in full, direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Soil: Hostas prefer moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Amend your soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting to improve drainage and fertility.
- Protection from Wind: Choose a location sheltered from strong winds, which can damage the large leaves.
- Planting Your Hosta:
For Potted Plants:
- Dig a hole that is twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball of your Hosta.
- Gently remove the Hosta from its pot, being careful not to damage the roots. You can gently loosen any circling roots.
- Place the Hosta in the center of the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil surface.
- Backfill the hole with the amended soil, gently firming it around the base of the plant.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
For Bare Root Plants:
- Soaking: As soon as you receive your bare root Hosta, soak the roots in a bucket of lukewarm water for 30 minutes to an hour. This will rehydrate them.
- Timing: Plant bare root Hostas in early spring or fall when the soil is cool and moist.
- Preparing the Planting Hole: Dig a hole that is wide enough to comfortably accommodate the spread of the roots and deep enough so that the crown (the point where the roots meet the stem) will be about 1 inch below the soil surface.
- Positioning the Roots: Create a small mound of soil in the center of the planting hole. Place the Hosta on top of the mound, spreading the roots out and down around it.
- Backfilling: Carefully backfill the hole with amended soil, ensuring the crown is positioned correctly. Gently firm the soil around the roots.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting.
- Ongoing Care:
- Watering: Hostas prefer consistently moist soil, especially during hot, dry periods. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid overhead watering, which can encourage fungal diseases. Soaker hoses or drip irrigation are ideal.
- Mulching: Apply a 2–3-inch layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or compost, around the base of your Hostas. This helps to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the stems to prevent rot.
- Fertilizing: Hostas generally do not require heavy fertilization. You can apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Alternatively, you can top-dress with compost annually. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to leggy growth.
- Pest Control:
- Slugs and Snails: These are the most common pests of Hostas, leaving behind telltale holes in the leaves. You can control them with various methods, including beer traps, copper tape, diatomaceous earth, or slug and snail bait.
- Deer: If deer are a problem in your area, consider planting more deer-resistant varieties or using deer repellents.
- Disease Control: Hostas are generally disease-resistant, but fungal diseases like anthracnose and leaf spot can occur, especially in humid conditions or with poor air circulation. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Remove and dispose of any infected leaves.
- Division: As Hostas mature, they can become quite large and crowded. You can divide them every 3-5 years in early spring or fall to create more plants and rejuvenate the original clump. To divide, carefully dig up the entire plant and use a sharp knife or spade to separate the crown into sections, ensuring each section has roots and at least one eye (bud). Replant the divisions as described above.
- Flower Stalk Removal (Optional): Some gardeners prefer to remove the flower stalks to encourage more foliage growth. However, the flowers can be attractive and beneficial to pollinators, so this is a matter of personal preference.
