4 Steps to Prepare Heuchera for Spring

Mar 27, 2020

HEUCHERAIf you've got a prized pot or patch of coral bells you might be wondering how to prepare them for the spring and summer ahead. We've listed four simple steps you can take to clean up your heuchera (and Heucherellas) to look its best!

Identify all growing points

If you have mature heuchera, you'll likely have several stalks in one area. Be sure to locate them all before setting your snippers to work - damage to young leaves should be avoided.

Concentrate on one spot

Choose a stalk and hold several of its leaves at once to snip. Work your way around the entire stalk. Be sure to remove debris gathered underneath the leaves on the soil or mulch surface. Work methodically through the plant.

Inspect plants

After all old leaves are removed, it's easier to see if the plant should be divided. If it is in a pot, you can assess if it needs to be planted in the landscape or potted up. All of these are great spring tasks!

Compost leaves

If all removed leaves look healthy and free of disease or harmful insects you can put them in your compost.
