Landscaping Design Tips
Rudbeckia 'Treasure Trove' is an invaluable asset in the garden, providing a burst of sunshine and ecological benefits to numerous landscape settings.
- Mass Planting: For an absolutely breathtaking and continuous display of golden color, mass plant 'Treasure Trove' in large sweeps or drifts. This creates a spectacular visual impact, provides excellent groundcover, and effectively suppresses weeds. Mass plantings are particularly effective in meadow-style gardens, large borders, or naturalized areas, and will attract an abundance of pollinators.
- Border Plant: Its sturdy, upright habit and long bloom time make it an excellent choice for the middle or back of perennial borders, adding vibrant color and texture.
- Pollinator and Wildlife Gardens: An essential component of any pollinator garden, its nectar-rich flowers are irresistible to butterflies and bees. The dried seed heads, left standing through winter, provide a vital food source for songbirds, enhancing garden biodiversity.
- Cottage and Eclectic Gardens: Its cheerful, informal blooms fit perfectly into the charming chaos of cottage gardens and add a vibrant element to eclectic designs.
- Prairie and Meadow Plantings: Naturally suited for prairie and meadow restoration projects or informal naturalistic gardens, where it contributes to the wild, untamed beauty.
- Containers: Can be grown in large patio containers to bring its vibrant color and cheerful demeanor closer to outdoor living spaces.
- Cut Flower Garden: The classic daisy-like flowers are perfect for cutting, providing long-lasting, sunny bouquets for indoor enjoyment.
- Rain Garden: Its tolerance for varying moisture levels, while preferring well-drained soil, can make it a suitable candidate for the drier zones of a rain garden.
- Autumn Interest: Ensure its inclusion in designs where fall color is desired, as its golden blooms persist late into the season, providing a brilliant display when many other plants are fading.
Rudbeckia 'Treasure Trove' is a robust and cold-hardy perennial, reliably thriving in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 9. This wide hardiness range ensures its successful cultivation across a vast majority of temperate climates.
Planting and Cultivation
- Sunlight: Thrives in Full Sun (more than 6 hours of direct sun per day) for the most prolific flowering and best overall performance. It can tolerate Part Shade (4-6 hours of direct sun), but flowering may be less abundant.
- Soil Requirements: Prefers well-drained, not overly rich soil. It adapts to Average Soil Quality. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil pH, from Acidic Soil (pH < 7.0) to Neutral Soil (pH = 7.0) and Alkaline Soil (pH > 7.0). Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.
- Water Requirements: Has Low Water Needs to Average Water Needs once established. It is reasonably drought-tolerant. Water regularly during the first growing season to ensure proper establishment.
- Maintenance:
- Deadheading: Remove spent flowers (deadhead) regularly to stimulate continuous bloom and prolong the flowering season.
- Winter Interest: Leave dried seed heads standing through winter for ornamental appeal and as a food source for birds. Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
- Pest and Disease: Highly resistant to Septoria leaf spot, which is a common issue for other Rudbeckia varieties. Also highly resistant to deer and rabbits, making it a very low-maintenance plant.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.

Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
