Planting and Cultivation (Bare Root)
- Bare Root Planting: Upon receiving bare roots, unpack them immediately. If dry, soak in lukewarm water for 30-60 minutes. Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread out the roots and deep enough so that the crown (where the roots meet the stem) is at or slightly below the soil surface. Gently spread the roots outwards. Backfill with soil, gently firming to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
- Sunlight: For the best flowering performance and to minimize powdery mildew concerns, locate 'Fancy Girl' in Full Sun (more than 6 hours of direct sun per day). It can tolerate Part Shade (4-6 hours of direct sun), but flowering may be reduced, and powdery mildew risk might slightly increase.
- Soil Requirements: Grows best in rich, moist, well-drained soil. It performs well in Average Soil Quality to Fertile Soil Quality. It is adaptable to both Acidic Soil (pH < 7.0) and Neutral Soil (pH = 7.0) chemistry. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
- Water Requirements: Requires Average Water Needs. It thrives with consistent moisture levels. Avoid overhead watering, as this can exacerbate powdery mildew. Water at the base of the plant to keep foliage dry.
- Fertilization: Will thrive with fertilization every other month during the growing season.
- Maintenance:
- Air Circulation: Ensure ample air circulation around the plants. When planting, space them appropriately, and consider thinning out congested stems periodically to improve airflow, which helps prevent powdery mildew.
- Deadheading: Deadheading spent flowers will prolong the bloom time and prevent the plant from self-seeding, which helps maintain the desired cultivar characteristics.
- Powdery Mildew: While 'Fancy Girl' is highly resistant, providing full sun, good air circulation, and avoiding overhead watering are the best preventative measures against powdery mildew.
- Pest and Disease: Highly resistant to powdery mildew. Generally robust but monitor for common garden pests if necessary.

Other Details
The most important part of the plant is its root system. Healthy roots are the foundation of a healthy, vibrant plant. The type of plug container used is based on the specific needs of the plants. Perennials offered as bare root traditionally perform better when planted as bare root.Planted in a specialized mix, potted plants have well established root systems. Top growth stage will vary depending on the current life cycle and time of year when shipped. In Winter and early Spring dormant plants may be shipped. Dormant plants may be planted right away, even before the last frost date.
Most bare root varieties are field grown for at least one season, though Hemerocallis and Hosta are grown for two seasons. The bulk of the soil is removed during the harvesting process and the tops of most varieties are trimmed back to the crown. They are graded, packed in shredded aspen or sphagnum moss and stored in freezers until ready to be shipped.

Plant information and care is provided in the Overview section, Plant Genus Page and general information is provided in the Planting Care & Guides. Additional questions can be asked on each Plant page.
Plant Spacing: Using the maximum mature spread or width of a plant to guide spacing, ensures space to grow to full size. To fill an area sooner, plant them closer together. Just remember, future thinning or transplanting may be needed.
Water: Keep a close eye on newly planted perennials, especially throughout the first growing year. Most early plant loss is due to too much or too little water!
