Herbaceous, rhizomatous perennial.
Golden-leaved cultivar of common oregano is a sprawling foliage mat. Oval, golden leaves are mildly aromatic. Tiny, pinkish-purple flower spikes rise above the foliage in summer. Leaves are used either fresh or dried to flavor food dishes.
Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils, Origanum vulgare likes gritty, sandy loams. Good heat and drought tolerance. Shearing 'Aureum' before it flowers will encourage new growth. Protect in hot zones by providing light afternoon shade
Excellent in containers, in mass plantings herb gardens or rock gardens. Tolerates light foot traffic, deer and drought.
