Mazus (may-zus); Phrymaceae Family. Heavy leaf mats make these low-growing perennials good ground covers and soil holders. The small flowers, white or blue, with yellow spots on the lower lip, grow in pretty clusters, which also make the plant easy and useful in the rock garden. In warmer sections, Mazus plants are evergreen. Full sun, ordinary garden soil and ample moisture are needed.

Mazus reptans (repp-tanz) Bluish-purple or white blooms, ¾ inches long, with yellow, white or purple spots on the lower lip, grow in clusters on 2 to 4 inch stems, above a low mat of foliage, and bloom most of the summer. Mazus is persistent and effective in the rock garden or rock slopes.

Grow Mazus in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil; for best performance place in moist, rich soil. Plant six plants per square yard.

Excellent ground cover or can be used as a lawn substitute in situations where foot traffic is somewhat minimal, between stepping stones and in rock gardens. Use as an under planting for bulbs and lilies. Deer resistant.
