Ajuga reptans 'Valfredda' CHOCOLATE CHIP
a/k/a Carpenters Herb, Comfrey, Creeping Bugleweed, Creeping Carpet Bugle, Sicklewort
Zone 4 to 9, maybe 3 to 10,
Sun to full shade, at least 3 to 4 hours of sun for best foliage color .
Mature foliage height 3 to 4 inch; dwarf habit spreading groundcover.
Chocolate with burgundy highlights, shiny, small, rounded leaves form dense, carpet-like, low-growing mat. Depending on the amount of sunlight, leaves are a mix of rich chocolate-purple and green (deeper color in more sun). Three (3) inch spikes of blue-violet, 4-lobed, flat flowers bloom from mid to late spring, above the low, spreading foliage. Stunning effect when planted en masse.
Prefers sandy, well-drained soil, or moist conditions with a good drainage. Tolerates clay or moderately dry areas. Spreading quickly by runners, small, narrow leaves weave a tight mat of foliage. Good ground cover; as a border plant; or in rock gardens, mass plantings, and containers. Petite size makes this variety suitable for planting between stepping stones, in wall crevices, or in other small spaces. It is also useful for erosion control on slopes. Not as invasive as many other ajugas. Divide when clumps become overcrowded. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, and deer resistant. Member of the mint family, used as a medicinal primeval wound coagulant.
