Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow'
a/k/a Carpenters Herb, Comfrey, Creeping Bugleweed, Creeping Carpet Bugle, Sicklewort
Zone 3 to 9, maybe 3 to 10
Sun or partial shade (morning sun only).
Mature foliage height 3 to 4 inch; fast growing groundcover.
Tricolored foliage (ivory white, burgundy/pink and green) and blue flowers on 6 inch spikes in mid to late spring. Evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage forms dense, carpet-like, low-growing mat that develops rich bronze and burgundy tones in winter.
Prefers sandy, well-drained soil, or moist conditions with a good drainage. Tolerates clay or moderately dry areas, but do not allow it to stay too wet or dry. Spreads quickly by runners, 'Burgundy Glow' tends to spread more slowly than many other Ajuga varieties, making it suitable for use as an edging. It also fits nicely into rock gardens and mixed container plantings. Good ground cover, great for erosion control; use as a border plant; or in rock gardens and containers; flowers can be very dramatic en mass plantings (plant 6 to 9 inches apart). Thrives under tree and shrub canopies where grass is hard to establish. Unlike many perennials that are grown only for their flowers, ajuga is prized for its attractive, colorful foliage that looks nice all year. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, and deer resistant. Member of the mint family, used as a medicinal primeval wound coagulant.
