Mature foliage height 3 to 4 inch; dwarf habit spreading groundcover.
Chocolate with burgundy highlights, shiny, small, rounded leaves form dense, carpet-like, low-growing mat. Three (3) inch spikes of blue-violet, 4-lobed, flat flowers in late spring.
Prefers sandy, well-drained soil, or moist conditions with a good drainage. Tolerates clay or moderately dry areas. Spreads quickly by runners. Good ground cover; as a border plant; or in rock gardens, mass plantings, and containers. Not as invasive as many other ajugas. Divide when clumps become overcrowded. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, and deer resistant. Member of the mint family, used as a medicinal primeval wound coagulant.
