Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum Apple Court' (Crested Japanese Painted Fern)
Zones 4 to 8, Part shade to full shade. Height 1.5 to 2 feet. A super crested form of Japanese Painted Fern. All of the same wonderful delicate, colorful frond characteristics of its Japanese Painted Fern parent, but with added fullness from its heavy cresting characteristics to create a fuller, delicate appearance. Fronds are a soft grayish-green with an overlay of silvery hues accented by contrasting dark maroon midribs. Appears silvery for several weeks in the spring, until fronds becoming greener with warmer temperatures. Apple Court is a pinnately crested form that differs by having distinctively crested pinnae on the fronds.
It does not come true from spore and must be produced in tissue culture. This hardy fern is easy to grow in organically rich, medium to wet, well-drained soils. If the frond edges become bristle or crispy, the soil may be too dry. Best frond color occurs in light shade. Use in containers, as a ground cover or for borders in woodland, shady locations. One quart container (bare root may be substituted depending on crop cycle).
