| Damp Soil Tolerant Plants |
There are plants that tolerate soggy spots; and moisture-loving plants that thrive in damp soil, but not as many that succeed in wet conditions.
Damp soils tend to be of two types - peat or clay. Peat soils are free draining, easy to work with and are rich in organic material. Clay soils retain moisture though often do not drain well. Applying gypsum, sand and organic material helps break apart the clay particles, improving soil structure. Raised beds or soil levels, to improve drainage, may be required to make damp clay soils workable for a majority of plants.
